In the early morning hours of Sunday, December 9, 2018, a violent incident unfolded in the parking lot of a nightlife establishment near Florissant, Missouri. St. Louis County Police officers were dispatched at approximately 1:15 a.m. to the Mystic Grille, a bar and lounge located in the 11800 block of West Florissant Avenue, following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival at the scene, law enforcement discovered an unresponsive African American male lying in the parking lot who had sustained at least one gunshot wound. Despite the response of emergency personnel, the victim had already succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities later identified the deceased as 27-year-old Cameron Chase Fowler. The shooting occurred just before the bar's closing time, in a commercial area that had seen similar violence in previous years; reports indicated this was the third homicide to take place in that specific parking lot since 2014. At the time of the incident, the St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons launched an active homicide investigation to determine the circumstances leading up to the gunfire.
Cameron Fowler was remembered by his family as a young father to a daughter and a beloved nephew. His uncle, Byron 'Sarge' Watson, a chaplain for the St. Louis County Police Department, spoke publicly about the tragedy, noting the heartbreak of counseling his own family after years of supporting others through similar trauma.
