On March 27, 2023, Electronics Technician Navigation 3rd Class (ETV3) Devon Faehnrich, a 21-year-old sailor assigned to the USS Montana (SSN 794), was found unresponsive by a fellow crew member on the pier adjacent to the submarine at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia. He was promptly transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
