Amonté Desour Walkup, a 21-year-old male, was fatally shot in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in the early morning hours of April 7, 2023. The incident was the culmination of a dispute with the ex-boyfriend of the woman he was dating.
On the evening of April 6, 2023, Khalil Shariff Jackson, 23, confronted the mother of his children about her new relationship with Walkup. Jackson was reportedly angry that Walkup was spending time with his children.
Later that night, while the woman and Walkup were at a bar on Princess Anne Road, Jackson repeatedly called and texted her with threats.
As Walkup and the woman were leaving the bar's parking lot in a vehicle just after 1:00 a.m., Jackson approached and fired multiple shots, striking Walkup in the head. An officer nearby heard three distinct gunshots. Walkup was found deceased in the vehicle. The woman was able to escape back into the bar for safety.
Following the shooting, Jackson fled the scene. Surveillance footage from the parking lot captured the shooter, dressed in dark clothing, firing a rifle. Investigators also discovered that Jackson had purchased the firearm just hours before the incident. His phone records revealed searches for terms such as 'AR15' and 'Virginia Beach Murder.' Jackson was apprehended in Georgia on May 18, 2023.
Khalil Shariff Jackson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. As part of a plea agreement, he was sentenced to 38 years in prison with 18 years suspended, leaving 20 years to serve for the killing of Amonté Desour Walkup.
