In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Virginia Beach, a tragedy unfolded that cut short the life of Sherman Lydell Lane. On October 5, 2019, police responded to a call at 1:07 a.m. regarding a man who had been shot in the 1000 block of Atlantis Drive. Upon their arrival, they discovered 40-year-old Sherman Lydell Lane suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services were rendered at the scene, but Lane ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of the male victim quickly led to a suspect. The Virginia Beach Police Department identified 28-year-old Ditron Laquay Thigpen as the individual allegedly responsible for Lane's death. Thigpen was subsequently arrested and faced multiple charges, including murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The case was then taken up by the Virginia Beach Police Department Investigative Division Homicide Unit for further investigation.
Sherman Lydell Lane, known to some by the nickname 'Worm,' was a father to six daughters and three sons. He attended Princess Anne High School and worked as a maintenance man. His death was mourned by a large family and many friends who remembered him as a loving, funny, and caring individual. His family and friends were left to cherish his memory, recalling a man who was loved by many and would be truly missed.
