In the early morning hours of April 23, 2023, the life of Brian Tyrone Taylor, a 42-year-old Black man from Roanoke, Virginia, was tragically cut short by gun violence. The incident that led to his death unfolded in the 100 block of Campbell Avenue SE, a downtown area of the city.
Roanoke police officers on patrol were drawn to the scene by the sound of gunshots shortly before 1:30 a.m.
Upon their arrival, they discovered a chaotic situation with one man, later identified as Taylor, lying outside a business with critical gunshot wounds. Inside a nearby establishment, a woman was also found with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Both individuals were transported to a local hospital for medical attention. A third person, a man, also suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound from the same incident, arrived at the hospital separately.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Brian Tyrone Taylor succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. His death prompted the Roanoke Police Department to launch a homicide investigation into the shooting.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of a suspect. On the Monday following the shooting, Brandon J. Woods, a 26-year-old Roanoke man, was arrested in connection with the fatal incident. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder. The Roanoke Police Department has not released further details about the motive or the circumstances that led to the shooting.
