On the morning of June 1, 2023, 34-year-old Rocco Marcus Nixon arrived at a daycare center on King Street in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was there to pay a bill, a routine task on what likely began as an ordinary day. His children were with him, waiting in his car, bearing witness to the tragic events that would unfold in a matter of moments. Shortly before 8 a.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the morning calm.
Nixon was shot multiple times in front of the daycare.
First responders rushed to the scene, and Nixon was transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal. He was pronounced deceased, leaving behind a grieving family and a community stunned by the brazen violence that occurred in a place dedicated to the care of children. The immediate aftermath of the shooting was a flurry of police activity and media attention as investigators began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to Nixon's death. Early in the investigation, the Portsmouth Police Department identified a person of interest, but the focus would soon shift as a suspect was identified and apprehended.
The investigation led to the arrest of Ryheem Jasaun Hargrow Pugh. In the subsequent legal proceedings, details emerged about the moments leading up to the fatal encounter. Evidence presented during the trial indicated that Pugh was also at the daycare, in a separate vehicle with the mother of Nixon's children. Both men exited their vehicles, and Pugh fired the shots that ended Nixon's life. In February 2024, a jury found Ryheem Jasaun Hargrow Pugh guilty of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shooting in the commission of a felony.
On April 30, 2024, Pugh was sentenced for his crimes. He received a total active sentence of 18 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised probation. The sentencing brought a measure of closure to the legal chapter of the case, but for the family of Rocco Nixon, the consequences of that June morning will be felt for a lifetime. The senseless act of violence not only took a man's life but also left an indelible mark on his children, who were tragically present at the scene of their father's murder.
