On the evening of September 24, 2020, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in the 40 block of Gilmerton Avenue in Portsmouth, Virginia. When the sounds of violence subsided, 20-year-old Daquan Terryon Jordan, a Black male, was found lying with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. Despite the efforts of first responders, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene, his life tragically cut short.
The investigation into Jordan's death led Portsmouth police to two individuals. Tayv'on K.
Black, who was 20 at the time, and 19-year-old Carlton Sherrod Jr. were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. Black faced a series of grave charges, including first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and obstruction of justice. Sherrod was charged with accessory after the fact to murder, among other offenses related to concealing evidence.
The legal process unfolded, and in January 2024, Tayv'on Black stood trial for the murder of Daquan Jordan. After the presentation of evidence and testimony, a jury returned a verdict of not guilty on the first-degree murder charge. Black was acquitted of the most serious offense he faced in connection with the 2020 shooting. The status of the case against Carlton Sherrod Jr. for his alleged role in the aftermath of the killing was not immediately clear following Black's acquittal.
