In the summer of 2023, the life of 58-year-old Raymond 'Raynard' Byers, a Black male, was tragically cut short in his Richmond, Virginia apartment. On the morning of July 1st, police officers responded to a request for a wellness check on Chamberlayne Avenue. Inside, they discovered Byers, who had been fatally shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving his family and friends to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a man they described as hardworking, soft-spoken, and a devoted
grandfather.
Byers was remembered by his loved ones as a kind and generous man, someone who would give you the shirt off his back. For 15 years, he had been a dedicated employee at the Tyson Foods plant in Glen Allen. After the plant's closure, he took on various temporary jobs to support himself. His children recalled him as a man who largely kept to himself and had no known enemies, making his violent death all the more shocking. The family's heartbreak was compounded by the discovery that his wallet was missing and his cell phone had been discarded in a nearby church trash bin, suggesting a robbery had taken a deadly turn.
For nearly a year, the case remained a painful, unanswered question for Byers' family. Then, on June 19, 2024, a significant development brought a measure of hope for justice. The Richmond Police Department announced the arrest of 19-year-old Is'mael Lane in connection with Byers' death. Lane faced a string of serious charges, including murder, robbery that resulted in murder, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The arrest offered a semblance of relief to a family that had been tirelessly seeking answers and justice for their beloved father and grandfather, whose life was senselessly taken.
