In the early morning hours of January 23, 2017, a discovery was made in an alley tucked away in Richmond's Northside that would leave a family grieving and a community searching for answers. Charles J. Lewis III, a 53-year-old Black male from Henrico, was found seated in the driver's seat of his vehicle. Initially, the call to emergency services at approximately 7:03 a.m.
suggested a medical emergency in the 2400 block of Barton Avenue.
First responders arrived on the scene with the intention of providing medical aid. However, as they began their attempts to resuscitate him, a grim reality came to light; Charles Lewis had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene, turning a medical call into a homicide investigation.
The Richmond Police Department identified Lewis and began their investigation into the city's latest killing. Despite their efforts, the case grew cold. Years have passed since that January morning, and the death of Charles J. Lewis III remains an unsolved homicide, as listed on the Richmond Police Department's official records.
