A sense of celebration following a high school graduation ceremony in Richmond, Virginia, turned to terror and tragedy in June of 2023. Moments after 18-year-old Shawn Jackson received his diploma from Huguenot High School, gunfire erupted in a nearby park where he had gone to meet his family. In the chaos that ensued, both Jackson and his 36-year-old stepfather, Renzo Smith, were fatally wounded.
The shooting, which occurred outside the Altria Theater, sent hundreds of people fleeing in panic and left five other individuals with injuries.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, with authorities quickly identifying a suspect. Amari Ty-Jon Pollard, who was 19 at the time, was taken into custody in connection with the killings.
