On the evening of July 15, 2023, a shooting occurred on Old Oyster Point Road, near Interstate 64 in Newport News, Virginia, that resulted in the death of 33-year-old Jeremy Hutchins. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene just before 9:00 p.m. Hutchins was transported to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Initially, the Newport News Police Department had no information on a suspect.
However, the investigation progressed, and ten days later, on July 25, 2023, an arrest was made in connection with the homicide. Thirty-year-old Maurice Friday was taken into custody and faced multiple charges, including first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and grand larceny of a firearm. Authorities credited direct involvement from the community as being instrumental in the swift resolution of the case.
Jeremy Michael Hutchins was born on April 24, 1990, in Jacksonville, Florida, and grew up in Hampton, Virginia. He was a graduate of Phoebus High School, where he was a standout athlete in both football and track. He served in the U.S. Army as a Motor Transport Operator from 2008 to 2010. Remembered for his warm and compassionate nature, he was a devout believer who enjoyed studying his bible, reading, and watching boxing. He was also a dedicated fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars. His family and friends recall him as a loving son, brother, uncle, and a loyal friend who left behind a legacy of cherished relationships.
