In the late evening hours of August 16, 2023, the life of 28-year-old Thomas Lee Henson, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in a parking lot on Heritage Way in Newport News, Virginia. Police responded to reports of gunshots at approximately 10:33 p.m. and discovered Henson suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died a short time later.
The initial stages of the investigation yielded no immediate
suspects, leaving a void of uncertainty for Henson's loved ones and the community. Described as a beloved individual whose presence was guaranteed to fill hearts with smiles, his sudden and violent death left a profound impact on those who knew him. Friends and family remembered him as a light in the world, someone who loved to spread joy wherever he went.
After a thorough investigation, the Newport News Police Department announced a significant development in the case. On August 25, 2023, authorities arrested 34-year-old Anthony Sharif Garland of Newport News. Garland was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with Henson's death. The police chief credited the community's assistance as being instrumental in the identification of the suspect.
