In the early morning hours of September 28, 2023, a sense of routine was shattered by sudden violence on Richmond Highway. Nineteen-year-old Ralshief Richardson, a male resident of Richmond, Virginia, was preparing to board a GRTC bus when his life was abruptly cut short. At approximately 7:28 a.m., as the bus was stopped at a bus stop in the southbound right lane, a gunshot rang out, and Richardson was struck.
When Richmond Police officers responded to the call, they found Richardson
unresponsive on the pavement near the rear door of the bus. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound. The tragic event prompted an immediate and intensive investigation by the Richmond Police detectives.
The area surrounding the bus stop was quickly cordoned off, and the southbound lanes of Richmond Highway were closed to allow investigators to work. Detectives began to piece together the moments leading up to the shooting, canvassing the area for any potential witnesses who might have seen or heard something crucial. They also started the process of collecting and reviewing video footage from nearby businesses and from the cameras on the GRTC bus itself, hoping to find any clues that could lead them to the person responsible.
Investigators determined that there were other passengers on the bus at the time of the fatal shooting who may have left the scene before police arrived. Authorities have publicly asked for these individuals and anyone else with information about the homicide to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
