On a Tuesday evening in Hopewell, Virginia, the life of 21-year-old Marciano Latrell Thorne was cut short. On October 3, 2023, at approximately 9:40 pm, police responded to the 1100 block of High Avenue after reports of an unconscious male who had been shot. Upon arrival, officers discovered Thorne suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Tri-Cities Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators later determined that the actual shooting occurred at the intersection of Winston Churchill Drive and Liberty Avenue. For months, the case remained under investigation. Then, on June 26, 2024, an arrest was made in connection with Thorne's death. Devon Lamont Mabry, a 27-year-old from Sussex, was arraigned on charges of 1st Degree Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Murder in the 1st Degree, and Use of a Firearm While in Commission of a Felony. At the time of his arraignment, Mabry was already incarcerated at Riverside Regional Jail on an unrelated matter and was held without bond on the new charges.
Marciano, known to friends and family as 'Marce,' was remembered for his enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. Described as loving, generous, and loyal, he had a positive impact on those around him with his fun personality and handsome smile. He had ambitions of building a successful business to provide for his family and enjoy a comfortable life. His sudden death left behind his mother, father, a brother, grandmothers, and a host of other family members and friends who cherished him.
