On the evening of August 18, 2024, in the 900 block of Davisville Court in Hopewell, Virginia, officers responded to a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival at approximately 7:55 p.m., they discovered 44-year-old Conell Gholson, known to many as 'Joe,' suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries. His death was the fourth homicide in the city of Hopewell that year.
The day following the fatal shooting, authorities made an arrest in connection with Gholson's death. Dallas Lee Sydnor, a 24-year-old from Richmond, was taken into custody on August 19, 2024. He has been charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Sydnor is currently being held without bond at the Riverside Regional Jail in Prince George County. Hopewell's police chief noted that cooperation from the community was instrumental in the swift apprehension of the suspect.
Conell Gholson was born on August 25, 1979. A graduate of Hopewell High School, he was remembered for his vibrant personality and his love for his daughter, family, and friends. He was an avid fan of the San Francisco 49ers and had a passion for old-school cars, music, and dancing. A service to celebrate his life was held on August 27, 2024, at the Faith and Hope Temple Church of God in Christ in Petersburg, Virginia. He was laid to rest at Mt. Sinai Community Cemetery in Prince George, Virginia.
