In the early evening of October 11, 2023, the life of 19-year-old Mika Satterfield, a Black male, was tragically cut short in a violent encounter in Chesapeake, Virginia. A recent graduate of Manor High School in Portsmouth, Satterfield was remembered by his family as a loving, energetic, and athletic young man with aspirations of a career in real estate.
He was known for a smile that could light up a room and was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and cousin.
The fatal incident unfolded around 6:10 PM in the 1300 block of Canal Drive. According to court records based on witness accounts, the driver of a dark-colored sedan shot Satterfield. As Satterfield attempted to flee the scene, the driver allegedly struck him with the car, dragging him for a distance before speeding away. Emergency services arrived to find Satterfield in a parking lot; he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
In the wake of the violence, the Chesapeake Police Department made a swift arrest. Twenty-three-year-old Kelvin Harris of Alexandria was taken into custody in connection with the killing. A witness reportedly noticed a suspicious vehicle and alerted authorities, which led officers to find and detain Harris. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and additional charges related to a hit-and-run.
Following the arrest, Harris was held without bail at the Chesapeake City Jail. Satterfield's family expressed their gratitude for the quick actions of law enforcement, emphasizing their hope for justice as the case proceeds through the legal system. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly released. In the days that followed, approximately 100 people gathered for a vigil to honor Mika Satterfield's memory, releasing balloons and lighting candles at the Marina Point Apartments where the tragedy occurred.
