On the evening of February 18, 2024, the community of South Hill, Virginia, was shaken by the tragic death of Jackie Hinman, a 76-year-old retired nurse known for her community involvement. The events of that night unfolded in her Green Hill Road home, culminating in a violent encounter that would end her life and leave her husband severely injured in what authorities would describe as a murder and attempted suicide.
Just before 7:30 p.m., a distress call was made to law enforcement,
reporting that a person was being held at gunpoint and that shots had been fired. When officers from the South Hill Police Department arrived at the residence, they discovered a grim scene. Jackie Hinman was found deceased, having suffered two gunshot wounds to the chest. Her husband, Douglas Hinman, was also found in the same room, alive but with a life-threatening self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest. He was immediately airlifted to a hospital in Richmond for medical attention.
The investigation into the shooting painted a somber picture of the couple's final days. They were in the midst of a divorce, and Jackie had been in the process of moving out of their shared home. Shortly before the fatal incident, a terrified Jackie Hinman had managed to call her daughter, telling her that her husband was holding her at gunpoint. A letter she had sent to her lawyer just days prior revealed her growing fear, in which she described her husband's escalating anger and a chilling reference he had made to 'murder/suicide.'
Following his release from the hospital, Douglas Hinman, then 69, was arrested on March 15, 2024. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and shooting into an occupied dwelling. In a plea agreement, Douglas Hinman admitted his guilt to these charges. In return, prosecutors dropped several other charges, including two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Body camera footage presented in court captured the immediate aftermath of the shooting, including an officer's question to the wounded Douglas Hinman, 'Did you shoot your wife and then shoot yourself?' to which he audibly responded, 'yes.'
Douglas Hinman was sentenced to a total of 70 years in prison, with all but 20 years suspended. He will also be subject to five years of supervised probation upon his release. At the sentencing, the judge acknowledged the couple's charitable work in the community but stated to Hinman, 'I don't find acceptance of responsibility' for the killing. For many years, the Hinmans had operated The Shepherd Shop and Shepherds Inn homeless shelter, a faith-based thrift store and shelter that had become a staple of the South Hill community. Jackie Hinman, a certified behavioral health nurse, had also been a candidate for the South Hill Town Council in 2022.
