In a heartbreaking turn of events on February 6, 2025, five-year-old Emani King, an African American female, was found deceased in her Chesapeake, Virginia home. The tragic incident, which also claimed the lives of her twin brother, Ermias King, and their 14-year-old sister, Kanaurie King, was determined to be a murder-suicide orchestrated by their mother.
Emani and her brother were cherished students at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, while their older sister was a seventh-grader at Indian River Middle School.
The devastating discovery was made after police were called to the family's residence in the 3000 block of Welcome Road for a welfare check at approximately 6:55 a.m. The call was prompted by a disturbing Facebook Live video posted by the children's mother, 34-year-old Cymone King-Roberson. In the live stream, King-Roberson's girlfriend saw what appeared to be the bodies of the three children and immediately alerted the authorities.
Upon their arrival, Chesapeake police found King-Roberson armed inside the home, leading to a barricade situation and the deployment of the SWAT team. After negotiations failed and officers heard a gunshot from within the residence, they made entry. Inside, they found Emani, Ermias, and Kanaurie deceased, along with their mother, who had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Family members revealed that King-Roberson was emotionally distressed following a recent breakup with her girlfriend. Her brother reported that she had called him and confessed to killing her children before taking her own life. Some relatives also indicated that she had been struggling with mental health issues and had resisted their attempts to help. The community of Peaceful Village was left in shock, with neighbors creating a memorial of teddy bears and toys in tribute to the young lives lost.
