In the late evening of May 31, 2024, the life of 33-year-old Chelsea R. Johnson of Richmond, Virginia, was tragically cut short. Johnson, an Amazon delivery driver, was near a warehouse in Chesterfield County when she was fatally shot. The incident, which occurred around 9:34 p.m. in the 1600 block of Bellwood Road, was determined to be a domestic-related event.
Law enforcement swiftly identified a suspect in the shooting.
The day after Johnson's death, on June 1, 2024, authorities from the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended 31-year-old Darryl M. Charity Jr., also a resident of Richmond. It was revealed that Johnson and Charity were acquainted and resided together, suggesting the act was not random.
Charity was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Chesterfield County Jail without bond. He faces serious charges in connection with Johnson's death, including second-degree murder, the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. This was not Charity's first encounter with the law, as he had a prior felony drug conviction from the previous year. For that offense, he had received a 10-year prison sentence, which had been entirely suspended.
