In the summer of 2017, a young life was tragically cut short in Richmond, Virginia. Jacquesha Billie Clanton, an 18-year-old Black female, was killed on June 15, 2017. Just days away from her high school graduation, she found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. A fight in the 2300 block of North 29th Street escalated into a chaotic scene of gunfire.
More than 30 to 50 shell casings were later found at the scene, a testament to the violence that erupted.
Jacquesha was one of four people shot that night, but she was the only one to sustain life-threatening injuries. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, she did not survive. Her death marked the 35th homicide in the city of Richmond that year and she was the third teenager to be killed in a span of just ten days. The community and her family were left reeling from the sudden and senseless loss of a young woman on the cusp of her future.
In the years that have followed, Jacquesha's case has grown cold. Despite the numerous people present during the initial altercation and subsequent shooting, no witnesses have come forward with information leading to an arrest for her murder. While one man was reportedly charged in connection with the incident, it was not for the shooting itself. The investigation into her death remains open, a source of ongoing pain and frustration for her family, particularly her father who continues to publicly plead for anyone with information to come forward. Organizations have highlighted her unsolved case in the hopes of generating new leads, but as of now, there are no suspects in the murder of Jacquesha Billie Clanton, and no arrests have been made.
