Noony Norwood, a 30-year-old Black transgender woman, was fatally shot in Richmond, Virginia, in what remains an unsolved case. In the early morning hours of November 5, 2016, just four days after her 30th birthday, Norwood was shot on the southside of the city. She was discovered unresponsive and rushed to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries the following day, November 6, 2016.
Friends and family remember Norwood as a person whose energy could brighten a room and as
someone who was a steadfast supporter of her community and loved ones. Her death was a profound loss for many, highlighting the ongoing violence faced by transgender and gender non-conforming people, particularly those of color. At the time, her death marked the 23rd known homicide of a transgender or gender non-conforming person in the United States in 2016.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Richmond Police Department launched an investigation. Detectives interviewed several individuals and appealed to the public for more information, specifically seeking to speak with anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident or who knew Norwood. They also expressed interest in a man who was seen driving a dark-colored sedan near the scene.
Despite their efforts, the case has grown cold. Investigators have received some information regarding potential suspects and even released a grainy image of a person of interest. The individual sought for questioning is described as a Black male, believed to be between 30 and 40 years old, standing between 6’2” and 6’4” tall, and weighing approximately 290 pounds. However, no arrests have been made in connection with her murder. Authorities have continued to ask for the public's help in bringing a resolution to the case and securing justice for Noony Norwood and her family.
