On March 31, 2023, the life of 55-year-old Peace Talbert was tragically cut short in her Richmond, Virginia home. That morning, at approximately 10:39 a.m., Richmond Police were dispatched to a residence in the 1100 block of Evergreen Avenue following a report of a shooting. Inside, they discovered Peace Talbert unresponsive, suffering from a gunshot wound.
She was quickly transported to a local hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation immediately pointed to her husband, 63-year-old James Talbert, III, as the primary suspect. A search for him began, and his vehicle, a silver Ford F-150, was spotted about seven miles away from the crime scene in a parking lot on North Avenue. At around 11:09 a.m., two officers approached James Talbert, who was outside his truck.
As the officers approached, Talbert fired at least one shot at them. In the ensuing exchange, the officers returned fire, striking Talbert. One officer's firearm reportedly malfunctioned during the incident. Aid was rendered to Talbert at the scene before he was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. A firearm was recovered at the location of the officer-involved shooting. The Richmond Police Department later released body camera footage and 911 calls related to the incident as part of a transparency initiative. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
