Summer Fuller, a 31-year-old Black woman, was a passionate hairstylist in Richmond, Virginia, remembered by her loved ones as a "lover." Family and friends gathered to celebrate her life at a vigil outside the Glam Boutique Salon, the place where she spent hours perfecting her craft. Her aunt, Novita Fuller, recalled a recent time Summer had styled her hair, saying, “I supported her.”
The family’s grief was compounded by loss, as Summer’s cousin had also been shot and killed in Richmond just over a year earlier.
On the night of February 13, 2023, Summer’s life was tragically cut short. Just after 10 p.m., her boyfriend, 29-year-old Dajon Baskerville, called the police to report that he had shot her. Officers rushed to the apartment in the 4200 block of Chamberlayne Avenue and tried to make contact with Baskerville. While outside, they heard another gunshot from within the residence.
The officers breached the door and found Baskerville, whom they immediately took into custody. Inside the apartment, they discovered Summer Fuller suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries but succumbed to her wounds and died.
At the scene, investigators seized a firearm. Dajon Baskerville was arrested and initially charged with attempted murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, with authorities indicating that additional charges were pending as the investigation progressed.
The case concluded with a conviction. Dajon Baskerville was found guilty of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. In May 2024, a judge sentenced him to 33 years in prison: 30 years for the murder charge and an additional three years for the firearm charge. A hearing for a separate charge of possession of a firearm by a violent felon was scheduled for the following month.
