In the late morning hours of February 12, 2023, tragedy struck in North Charleston, South Carolina, forever altering the lives of one family. Kakisha Latifa Favor, a 27-year-old Black/African American woman, was fatally shot near the 1900 block of Reynolds Avenue. Responding to reports of the shooting just before noon, officers from the North Charleston Police Department arrived to find a harrowing scene.
Bystanders, including an individual who identified themselves as a doctor, were attempting to render aid to Favor.
Despite the urgent efforts to save her, Favor’s injuries were too severe. She was rushed to the Medical University of South Carolina but tragically succumbed to her wounds while en route. Her death was officially pronounced at 11:26 a.m. The initial investigation painted a grim picture of the assailant's escape, with authorities learning that the person responsible had fled the scene on a bicycle. The sudden and violent loss of the young woman, who was born on December 19, 1995, in Richland County to Calvin Favor and Lydia Brooks and had attended Airport High School, sent ripples of grief through her community.
The pursuit of justice for Kakisha Favor moved swiftly. Through the combined efforts of North Charleston Police detectives and the FBI Gang Task Force, a suspect was identified and apprehended just three days after the fatal shooting. On February 15, 2023, 19-year-old Terell Travon Washington-Matthew was arrested in connection with the murder. He was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
As the legal process began to unfold, those who knew and loved Kakisha mourned their profound loss. A memorial service was held on February 20, 2023, at Pearson's Funeral Home in Columbia, South Carolina, where family and friends gathered to honor her memory. She was survived by her parents, two brothers, Maurice Antonio Brooks Jr. and Breon Brown, two nieces, and a host of other relatives and friends who were left to grapple with her untimely and tragic passing.
