In the early morning hours of December 16, 2021, Andrea Reynolds, a 28-year-old woman, made a frantic 911 call from a home in North Charleston, South Carolina. Just before 2:30 a.m., she told a dispatcher that she believed her boyfriend, David Beaufort, was overdosing. Her call for help set in motion a tragic and violent series of events.
First responders, including North Charleston Police Officer Jamie Sylvester, arrived at the residence on Ranger Drive at 2:35 a.m.
As they entered the home, they were met with gunfire. Beaufort, who was in a bathroom with Reynolds, fired at the emergency personnel four times. Officers did not return fire. Amid the chaos, Beaufort turned the gun on his girlfriend. Andrea Reynolds was struck by multiple gunshots and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Beaufort, then 39, was taken into custody by police. He later admitted to emergency medical services that he had been drinking Everclear and smoking marijuana laced with cocaine. Investigators arrested Beaufort, and he was charged with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
Beaufort’s defense team initially intended to pursue a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. However, after a court-ordered mental examination, doctors concluded that Beaufort had the mental capacity to distinguish right from wrong at the time of the shooting. During his trial, which began on November 3, Beaufort testified and claimed he had acted in self-defense.
The jury rejected his self-defense claim, and David Beaufort was convicted for the murder of Andrea Reynolds and the attempted murder of a police officer. Following the verdict, he was sentenced for the crimes. The case was officially closed as of the trial's conclusion in November.
