In April 2021, the community of North Charleston, South Carolina, was shaken by a violent incident that claimed the life of a well-regarded local resident. Sandra Elaine Molen Coakley, a 63-year-old Black / African American woman, was discovered deceased at her home on Parana Street on April 10, 2021. Authorities responded to the residence following reports of a shooting, where they found Coakley suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.
The sudden and brutal nature of her death prompted an immediate homicide investigation by the North Charleston Police Department, who began canvassing the area and collecting evidence to identify those responsible.
Detectives worked through the initial stages of the inquiry, eventually securing leads that pointed toward specific individuals believed to be involved in the shooting. On April 22, 2021, less than two weeks after the murder, law enforcement officers arrested 19-year-old Tyson Tyree Tucker. The arrest was executed with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Task Force, and Tucker was subsequently charged with murder in connection with Coakley's death. He was booked into the detention center, where legal records indicated he remained in custody as the case progressed through the judicial system.
As the investigation continued, police identified a second suspect implicated in the crime. This individual, identified in reports by the surname Bowens, later surrendered to the North Charleston Police Department and U.S. Marshals to face charges related to the incident.
