In the late summer of 2022, the life of 29-year-old Teresa Jenkins-Self, an African-American woman and licensed practical nurse from North Charleston, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. At the time of her death on September 2nd, she was eight months pregnant and a mother to two children. Her friends and family remembered her as a loving, nurturing, and outgoing individual who was dedicated to caring for others, both in her professional and personal life.
On that fateful day, just
hours before her death, Teresa Jenkins-Self made a desperate call to 911, seeking assistance in removing her husband, 25-year-old Javerick Devonta Tyrell Self, from their home. In the distressing audio of the call, her pleas for help were audible as the line abruptly went dead. When police officers arrived at her apartment, they discovered a grim scene. Teresa was found unresponsive on her couch, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her head. The two children in the home were found unharmed in a back bedroom.
The investigation into the death of Teresa Jenkins-Self quickly led to the arrest of her husband, Javerick Self. He was taken into custody on the morning of September 2, 2022. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder, one for Teresa and another for their unborn child. Additionally, he faced a charge for possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
Following his arrest, Javerick Self appeared for a bond hearing where he was denied bond and remains in custody. The case was presented to a grand jury, and as of the latest available information, the matter is still pending within the Charleston County court system. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young mother and her unborn child, a life full of promise extinguished in a moment of violence.
