On June 18, 2023, at approximately 12:30 a.m., 50-year-old Velvet Denise Foster was found deceased in the front yard of a residence under construction on Catawba Road in Gaffney, South Carolina. She had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initially, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office indicated that the incident was not considered a random act of violence. A second individual was also shot and hospitalized.
