On a summer evening in Fairfield County, South Carolina, a party's celebratory atmosphere was shattered by gunfire, leaving a community to mourn the loss of 21-year-old Tyon Dremetrius Byrd of Winnsboro. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at a gathering on West Peach Road in the Greenbrier area. When deputies from the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene around 9:30 p.m., they discovered that two individuals had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Byrd,
gravely wounded, was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. A third person, also with gunshot wounds believed to be from the same incident, later arrived at an area hospital. The two other victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The Fairfield County Coroner's Office confirmed Byrd's identity and his death was investigated as a homicide by the sheriff's office, the coroner's office, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
For over a year, the case remained under investigation as authorities followed leads to identify the person responsible for the shooting. On August 19, 2024, the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of Marshawn Devon Geiger in connection with Byrd's death. Geiger, who was already incarcerated on unrelated charges, was charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Investigators were able to identify Geiger as a gunman after continuing to follow leads in the case. While an arrest has been made, authorities have not released a motive for the shooting that cut short the life of Tyon Dremetrius Byrd.
