In the quiet town of Winnsboro, South Carolina, a burst of violence on the evening of April 18, 2020, irrevocably shattered the peace and ended the life of 46-year-old Juan J. Williams. The male victim was in the vicinity of the 200 block of Birch Street at approximately 8:15 p.m. when he was struck by gunfire. Rushed to the Prisma Health Emergency Room in Winnsboro, his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead.
Another individual was also wounded in the shooting but survived with non-life-threatening injuries after being transported to Prisma Health Richland.
The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office launched an immediate and intensive investigation into the fatal shooting. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of two men, Neil Smith, Jr., then 26, and Rondell T. Trapp, then 35, as the primary suspects in the incident. Warrants were issued for their arrests on grave charges of murder and attempted murder. Authorities at the time cautioned the public that both Smith and Trapp were to be considered armed and extremely dangerous, urging anyone with information on their whereabouts to come forward.
As deputies were managing the scene of Williams' homicide, another, unrelated shooting incident unfolded less than an hour later on the same street, further alarming the community. In that case, an arrest was made shortly after. However, the investigation into the killing of Juan Williams continued, with law enforcement appealing to the public for assistance in locating the two men they believed were responsible for his untimely death.
