On a Christmas Eve morning in Aiken, South Carolina, a holiday turned tragic for 29-year-old Rondre J. Gomillion, a Black male who lost his life in a fatal shooting. The incident unfolded around 11 a.m. on December 24, 2023, in the front yard of a home on Squire Street. According to witnesses, an argument between Gomillion and another man escalated, culminating in gunfire.
Responding deputies found Gomillion unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his chest and, despite their efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspected gunman fled the scene in a dark blue Chevrolet Suburban or Trailblazer. Authorities identified the suspect as 34-year-old Tony Muldrow of Effingham, who was believed to have ties to Florence County. A witness, who was acquainted with the suspect through a dating app, identified him to law enforcement.
Four days later, on December 28, 2023, the Florence County Sheriff's Office apprehended Tony Muldrow. He was extradited to Aiken County to face charges of manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Muldrow was subsequently held at the Aiken County Detention Center.
The legal proceedings against Muldrow took an unexpected turn when, on the morning of March 20, 2024, he was found in medical distress while in custody at the Aiken County Detention Center. He was transported to Aiken Regional Medical Centers, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. Officials stated that Muldrow's death was not considered suspicious, though the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was called in to conduct an independent investigation, a standard procedure for in-custody deaths. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of his death.
