In the late autumn of 1911, a dispute on the streets of Aiken, South Carolina, culminated in the tragic death of a veteran lawman. Officer Wade Hampton Patterson, a 55-year-old man who had dedicated 35 years of his life to law enforcement, was shot and killed while attempting to make an arrest.
