On April 28, 1946, Edward Bennett and his wife, Mary Bennett, were tragically shot to death in front of their young children during a robbery at their grocery store in Aiken County, South Carolina. Edward Bennett's last words were reportedly, 'a big negro shot me and robbed me'. This violent crime left the community in shock and fear, prompting an intense investigation by the Aiken County police.
