Deputy Sheriff Daniel Curtis Ahl of the Aiken County Sheriff's Office in South Carolina was tragically killed on July 22, 1902. He was shot while riding with a posse attempting to arrest a suspect who had murdered Officer Joseph Flanders of the Swainsboro Police Department in Georgia just four days earlier. The posse located the suspect in his mother's yard, and as Deputy Ahl approached on horseback, the suspect stepped aside and shot him in the back.
