In the quiet, early morning hours of May 9, 2015, in Aiken, South Carolina, a sequence of events unfolded that would tragically end the life of 21-year-old Darius Scruggs. Officers from the Aiken Department of Public Safety were dispatched to a residence on Brown Lane following a report of a burglary in progress. Upon their arrival, they discovered Scruggs suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Emergency medical services were promptly called to the scene, and the young man was
rushed to Georgia Regents Medical Center for urgent care. For days, he fought for his life, but the severity of his injury proved to be insurmountable. On May 15, 2015, six days after the shooting, Darius Scruggs succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at 9:46 a.m.
