On a Monday morning in Aiken, South Carolina, the quiet of the 300 block of Greenwich Drive was shattered by the sound of gunfire. It was May 6, 2024, and at approximately 11:10 a.m., officers from the Aiken Department of Public Safety responded to reports of a shooting in the area. Their investigation led them to a backyard shed at 320 Greenwich Drive SW, where they made a grim discovery. Inside, they found the body of Jalen Zy'Ier Jones, a 22-year-old male resident of Aiken.
The Aiken County Coroner, Darryl Ables, pronounced him dead at the scene, confirming that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.
Jalen, born on June 21, 2001, was the son of Chafonta James and Zack Jones. He was a young man with a passion for sports, having played both football and basketball, including AAU basketball from the fifth to the tenth grade. He also had a love for music and enjoyed spending time in the studio. His life was tragically cut short in an act of violence that left his family and community mourning. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed in Newberry to provide further insight into the circumstances of his death.
The Aiken Department of Public Safety, in conjunction with the Aiken County Coroner's Office, immediately launched a comprehensive investigation into the homicide. For nearly two months, they followed leads and gathered evidence. Their efforts led to a significant breakthrough on July 1, 2024, with the arrest of 28-year-old Jaquarez Deshon Bibbs of North Augusta. Bibbs was apprehended in Richmond County, Georgia, with the assistance of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office and the ATF Rage Task Force. He was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. According to the arrest warrant, Bibbs, along with other unidentified individuals, was accused of firing multiple shots at Jones.
Following his capture, Bibbs was held in an Augusta, Georgia jail without bond, awaiting extradition to South Carolina. Despite this key arrest, authorities have indicated that the investigation is far from over. They believe at least one other suspect, a 24-year-old man also from North Augusta, was involved, and they anticipate making more arrests as they continue to piece together the events that led to the untimely death of Jalen Jones. Law enforcement has urged anyone with information to come forward to help bring all those responsible to justice.
