In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Sumter, South Carolina, a dispute between acquaintances escalated into a fatal encounter that claimed the life of 40-year-old Jeremie Devon Richardson. On September 15, 2024, what began as a social gathering for a group of people, including James Christopher Wilson, turned violent. An argument that started earlier in the night festered, leading to a confrontation outside a residence on Lirope Way.
As the argument intensified, Richardson became
involved. The verbal altercation quickly escalated to an exchange of gunfire between Richardson and Wilson. In the aftermath, Richardson was discovered inside his vehicle, which had come to a stop in a nearby intersection on Rhododendron Street. He had sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died shortly after arriving.
The Sumter Police Department launched an immediate investigation into the shooting. Their inquiries led them to identify 38-year-old James Christopher Wilson as the suspect. Wilson was located later that same evening at a residence on King Street and was taken into custody without incident. Following his arrest, Wilson was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center.
Authorities have charged James Christopher Wilson with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. While an arrest has been made, the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly shooting remains ongoing. An autopsy was scheduled by the Sumter County Coroner's Office to formally determine the cause of death.
