In the late hours of a Saturday evening, a dispute outside a Sumter, South Carolina bar tragically escalated, claiming the life of 26-year-old Rayquan Kentrell Dean. On April 8, 2023, outside Brewer's Bar and Grill on East Wesmark Boulevard, an ongoing disagreement between Dean and another man turned violent. Shots were fired, and when Sumter Police officers arrived around 11:30 p.m., they found Dean, a resident of Pinewood, deceased at the scene.
Witnesses reported that an argument
between Dean and another individual had turned into a physical altercation. Shortly after the shooting, a vehicle was seen speeding away from the parking lot. Law enforcement was able to stop the fleeing vehicle and took the driver, identified as 31-year-old Antwaun A. June of Sumter, into custody. Investigators identified June as the shooter.
Following the incident, Antwaun A. June was arrested and faced multiple charges, including murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, unlawfully carrying a firearm, and failure to stop for blue lights. He was subsequently booked into the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed to determine the exact cause of Dean's death. The investigation into the shooting continued as authorities sought to understand the nature of the dispute that led to the fatal encounter. The Sumter Police Department also took steps to request the revocation of the alcohol license for Brewer's Bar and Grill following the deadly incident.
