In the pre-dawn hours of Sunday, October 6, 2024, the life of 34-year-old Steven Joshua 'Josh' King, a white male, was tragically cut short during a violent home invasion in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Deputies responded to a call of a burglary in progress at a residence on Parris Bridge Road at approximately 2 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered King suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 3:59 a.m. King, known for being full of life and never meeting a stranger, was a beloved figure in the local hospitality industry.
The investigation into the deadly shooting quickly led to an arrest. Authorities took 34-year-old Steve Phommachanh of Spartanburg into custody at the scene. Phommachanh was subsequently charged with murder, burglary, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and attempted murder. The incident was not only a homicide but also involved an attempt on the life of another individual present in the home at the time of the break-in.
Phommachanh is currently being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center. He appeared for a bond hearing where he was denied bond, ensuring he remains in custody as the case proceeds.
