On the evening of October 26, 2017, a tragedy unfolded in Rock Hill, South Carolina, that cut short the life of 26-year-old Justin Kale Penland. Responding to a call just after 9 p.m. regarding a pickup truck that had crashed into a parked car and an apartment building at the Mallard Pointe Apartments on Eden Terrace, police made a grim discovery. The male driver, identified as Penland, was suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, but tragically, he did not survive his injuries.
The subsequent investigation into Penland's death revealed a story of a drug deal that had taken a violent and fatal turn. Authorities determined that Penland had been shot during an attempted robbery. The investigation moved swiftly, and soon, three suspects were taken into custody in connection with the homicide. Isaiah Hemphill, then 20, was identified as the alleged gunman and faced a string of serious charges, including murder, attempted armed robbery, possession of a firearm during a violent crime, and possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Two 17-year-olds, Donovan Allen and Shaun Welte, were also arrested and charged with attempted armed robbery, accessory after the fact to murder, and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
As the case progressed, a fourth suspect, 19-year-old Johnte Kaheem Williams, was also arrested and charged with murder and other related offenses. During legal proceedings, it was revealed that Allen and Welte were accused of using a car to block Penland's vehicle before the shooting. Allen was also alleged to have later painted the vehicle involved to help evade capture. In a significant development in the case, Isaiah Hemphill entered into a plea agreement. His murder charge was reduced to manslaughter, and he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the death of Justin Penland.
