In the early morning hours of a summer Friday in Rock Hill, South Carolina, a dispute over the custody of a five-month-old child escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of a young father. Charles Curtis Gaither Jr., a 26-year-old Black man, was shot and killed on July 28, 2023, during the heated confrontation. Another man, Gaither's brother, was also wounded in the shooting but survived his injuries. When emergency services arrived at the scene, they found Gaither already deceased.
