In the late hours of a February night in Macon, Mississippi, the life of London Dewayne Rupert, a 35-year-old man, was tragically cut short. On the evening of February 3, 2023, while driving at the intersection of Washington Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, gunfire erupted from the side of the street. Rupert was struck by the bullets and was later transported to a hospital in Jackson, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries on February 5, 2023. He was born on January 11, 1988, in Noxubee County.
The investigation into the shooting led Macon police to two suspects. A week after the incident, authorities arrested 20-year-old Deambershea Bush and a 16-year-old male, Juaquaious Shanklin. Bush was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and shooting into a vehicle. Shanklin faced charges of felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault. Following their arrests, both suspects were held in jail.
During a court appearance, Deambershea Bush was denied bond. Juaquaious Shanklin's bond was set at $200,000. The case was expected to be a lengthy process as law enforcement awaited forensic evidence from the crime lab before it could be presented to a grand jury. London Rupert was a father and a fiancé, leaving behind his children and his betrothed. His funeral services were held at the New Jerusalem Church in Shuqualak, and he was laid to rest in the church cemetery.
