In the late hours of May 29, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the night on Washington Street in Macon, Mississippi, ending the life of 23-year-old Demetris Harris Jr. A Black male, Harris was driving when the hail of bullets began. Struck by a single shot to the abdomen, he lost control of his vehicle, crashing after hitting mailboxes and a ditch. He was rushed to Noxubee General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Investigators at the scene recovered more than 30 shell casings, evidence that pointed to the terrifying reality that multiple shooters were involved in the attack. The sheer number of casings from different firearms suggested a coordinated and violent assault. In the days that followed, police released images of the car Harris was driving, hoping it might jog the memory of potential witnesses who could provide crucial information. The motive for the shooting remains a mystery, leaving a community and a grieving family desperate for answers.
As the investigation continued, police revealed they were searching for multiple suspects who they believe were in a Nissan SUV at the time of the shooting. This vehicle had been reported stolen in Columbus by a visitor to the area and has yet to be recovered.
