In the winter of 2016, a dispute at a local nightclub in Macon, Mississippi, tragically cut short the life of 34-year-old Andrew Quintrell Sherrod. The male business owner was fatally shot on the night of December 11, 2016, at his own establishment on Gillespie Road. Another man, Deangelo Martin, was also wounded in the incident but was expected to recover from his injuries.
The conflict began inside the nightclub when Cedric Shantel Carter, then 35, got into an argument with his wife. Sherrod, as the proprietor, intervened and asked Carter to leave the premises. This request led to an escalation of the disagreement outside the bar. Carter, a Columbus native who had been residing in Noxubee County, produced a firearm and shot both Sherrod and Martin. Sherrod sustained two gunshot wounds, one to his lower back and another to his side. He was transported to Noxubee General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
Law enforcement officials from the Noxubee County Sheriff's Office quickly identified Carter as the suspect and took him into custody. Initially, the specific charges related to Sherrod's death were pending, while an aggravated assault charge was filed for the shooting of Martin. An autopsy was ordered to be performed by the Mississippi State Crime Lab to determine the precise cause and manner of Sherrod's death.
Ultimately, Cedric Carter faced justice for his actions. In April 2018, Carter, then 36, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Noxubee County Circuit Court for the shooting death of Andrew Sherrod. As a result of his guilty plea, he was sentenced to serve 40 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections, bringing a legal conclusion to the violent encounter that ended a man's life and injured another.
