In the early morning hours of January 19, 2023, the life of 47-year-old Ishmael Hassan Saleem, a male resident of Macon, Georgia, was tragically cut short. Just before 2:00 a.m., deputies from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 2300 block of Lincoln Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Saleem unresponsive inside his Saturn Aura. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency services transported him to Atrium Health, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased by the hospital staff.
The investigation into Saleem's death unfolded over the following months. His family and community mourned the loss of a man described as an honorable and giving person who was the oldest of eight children and deeply loved by his family and the children in his community. He was known for freely giving his time and money to others. Funeral services were held on January 28, 2023, at Bentley's Chapel, followed by a burial in Lovejoy Cemetery.
More than a year later, on March 14, 2024, the Bibb County Sheriff's Office announced a significant development in the case. Arrest warrants for murder were served on two individuals: 37-year-old Shaun Mills and 40-year-old Terrell Ugean Mills. At the time the warrants were served, both men were already incarcerated for other alleged crimes. Shaun Mills was in custody at the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office in Anniston, Alabama, while Terrell Ugean Mills was being held at the Jones County Sheriff's Office.
The investigation revealed that the Mills brothers were also suspects in another murder that occurred just days before Saleem's death. They were accused of the January 19, 2023, murder of 52-year-old Pinal Kumar Patel on Thoroughbred Lane. The process to extradite both Shaun and Terrell Mills to Bibb County to face the murder charges in connection with Ishmael Hassan Saleem's death was initiated following the issuance of the warrants.
