In a chaotic burst of violence on a Sunday afternoon, 23-year-old Devontae McMillian, a male resident of Louisville, Mississippi, was fatally wounded. The incident, which occurred on February 12, 2023, near a convenience store known as Blackwell's store at the intersection of Jones and John C. Stennis Avenues, resulted in a total of six people being shot.
McMillian suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to a hospital in Jackson, where he succumbed to his injuries that evening.
The shooting, which involved more than 40 gunshots, led to a swift law enforcement response. The day after the incident, authorities announced that one person was in custody, though their identity and potential charges were not immediately disclosed. As the investigation progressed, the scope of the arrests widened significantly. Within a few days, a total of five individuals were taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting.
The suspects arrested were identified as Nazyrian Goss, 16; Eleshawn Clark, 16; Cameron Thompson, 16; Decameron Moore, 17; and Elvandrick Idom, 21. All of the suspects were from Louisville, with the exception of Moore, who resided in Noxapater. The four minors were slated to be tried as adults.
Initially, all five suspects were charged with aggravated assault. However, law enforcement officials indicated that these charges were expected to be upgraded pending the results of an autopsy on Devontae McMillian. The investigation continued as forensic investigators worked to determine who was responsible for McMillian's death and the injuries sustained by the other five victims. In the interest of transparency, the police chief stated that security video from the time of the shooting would be released to the public once the investigation was complete.
