In the autumn of 2021, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of 18-year-old Tyquan McCully in Louisville, Mississippi. A Black/African American male, McCully was with friends and family on the evening of October 13, 2021, engaged in a pickup basketball game on West College Street. The familiar sounds of the game were abruptly shattered by the ringing out of gunshots, creating a scene of chaos and panic.
When the commotion subsided, Tyquan McCully was found lying in the street with a gunshot wound to his head. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The community was left reeling from the sudden and tragic loss of a young life. According to McCully's cousin, who was present during the incident, the group had noticed cars repeatedly driving by the area before the shooting, which they found unusual. After the shooting, a review of a Facebook Live video they had been recording of the game revealed what appeared to be a red beam on McCully, leading his cousin to believe that he was specifically targeted. The suspect, police have stated, was not a participant in the basketball game.
In the immediate aftermath, the Louisville Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, collecting evidence and compiling a list of potential suspects. A cash reward was offered for any information that could lead to an arrest. However, despite these initial efforts, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made in connection with the murder of Tyquan McCully.
