In the small town of Louisville, Mississippi, the life of 16-year-old Montevious Quartez Goss, a Black male, was cut tragically short in early 2023. The teenager was last seen on the morning of January 11, 2023, around 7:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Dean Drive. He was seen getting into a green Dodge single-cab pickup truck, a detail that would later become a crucial piece of the timeline in his disappearance.
After he was reported missing, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation issued an Endangered/Missing Child Alert in an effort to find him.
The search for Montevious came to a heartbreaking end on January 30, 2023. Railroad workers discovered his body in a wooded area situated between Railroad Avenue and South Church Avenue in Louisville. The Louisville Police Department subsequently confirmed the body was that of the missing teenager. An autopsy later determined that Montevious had died from a gunshot wound. While investigators have considered the possibility that the gunshot may have been self-inflicted, the case continues to be investigated.
The story took another violent turn just weeks after Montevious's body was found. On February 12, 2023, a gunfight erupted outside a convenience store in Louisville, resulting in one fatality and five other people being injured. Authorities have stated that this shooting was connected to the death of Montevious. Among the victims were several of his relatives, including two half-brothers, his stepmother, and his 23-year-old cousin, Devontae McMillian, who succumbed to his injuries. Police believe friends of Goss were involved in this subsequent shooting, viewing it as a possible act of retaliation.
In the aftermath of the February shooting, several arrests were made. The suspects taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault included 16-year-olds Nazyrian Goss, Eleshawn Clark, and Cameron Thompson, as well as 17-year-old Decameron Moore and 21-year-old Elvandrick Idom. The investigation is ongoing to determine who fired the shot that killed Devontae McMillian. However, to date, no arrests have been made directly in connection with the death of Montevious Quartez Goss.
