In the late afternoon of July 3, 2023, a dispute outside the Mexico Grill on Highway 61 North in Tunica, Mississippi, escalated into deadly violence. During the altercation, 35-year-old Jimmy Dotson, a Black man known to friends and family as 'He-Man,' was fatally shot. First responders attempted to treat Dotson at the scene, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
A second individual was also wounded in the shooting but left the scene in a private vehicle and was later transported to a medical center with non-life-threatening injuries. Dotson, a father of six, was remembered by his loved ones as being the life of the party.
The Tunica County Sheriff's Office launched a homicide investigation that quickly led to the identification of several individuals. Cortez Wilkins, 43, was initially named a person of interest and brought in for questioning but was later released without charges related to the murder. The investigation soon focused on other suspects, leading to a series of arrests. Quinterrance Vardaman, a 25-year-old from Tunica, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Dotson's death. Vardaman was already facing a separate murder charge from a 2020 incident. Another man, 36-year-old Jasean French of Coldwater, was also charged with first-degree murder and was taken into custody on July 31, 2023.
As the investigation continued, more arrests were made. Robert Earl Fleming, 26, of Horn Lake, was charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder. Charlie Bass Jr., 28, of Tunica, faced a charge of possession of a stolen firearm. Additionally, 25-year-old Jameshia Brown of Tunica was arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including tampering with evidence and hindering prosecution. Authorities discovered that Brown had been in possession of Jimmy Dotson's vehicle since the time of the shooting. In June 2024, while awaiting indictment for the murder of Dotson, Quinterrance Vardaman pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2020 shooting death of 18-year-old Trevon Bell and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The charges against him and the other suspects in the death of Jimmy Dotson are reportedly pending indictment.
