On the late evening of June 3, 2024, tragedy struck at the Tunica Courts Apartments on Old Highway 61 N in Tunica, Mississippi. A 911 call was placed at approximately 10:48 p.m. reporting that an individual had been shot. When deputies and first responders arrived at the scene, they discovered a woman suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel treated her at the scene, but her injuries proved to be fatal.
The woman, identified as 34-year-old Brenda Miller of Robinsonville, was pronounced dead by the Tunica County Coroner.
The investigation into Miller's death moved swiftly, and by June 5, four suspects were in custody. The Tunica County Sheriff's Office arrested 21-year-old Jaylon Carter and 21-year-old Dequaveon Spears, both of Tunica. Alongside them, two juveniles, 17-year-old Jaylin Liddell and 16-year-old DeShaun Clayborn, also from Tunica, were taken into custody. The two teenagers are being charged as adults for their alleged involvement in the homicide.
The four individuals face a litany of serious charges. Carter and Spears have both been charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder, as well as shooting into a motor vehicle and unlawful discharge of a firearm within a populated area. Carter faces additional charges of possession of a stolen firearm and carrying a concealed weapon. Liddell and Clayborn are each facing charges of second-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, drive-by shooting, and unlawful discharge of a firearm within a populated area. The investigation remains active and ongoing as law enforcement continues to piece together the events that led to the untimely death of Brenda Miller.
